Renee is so right--whole language does not exclude phonics as an element of 
learning to read. Whole language is the epitome of differentiated, striving to 
give each child what he or she needs in the context of meaningful, literature 
rich experiences.  Let's not denigrate the importance of phonics education to a 
'do they or don't they' argument, but consider instead the 'how they...'
