Hello all,

I have gone through and reread parts of “Book whisperer” trying to wrap my
brain around how I will organize this. I had my 8th graders reading their
books whenever time aloud. I do not fill time with unnecessary worksheets
or projects so I feel I am not far from the book whispering idea. Heehee

My question for the group is how many books should be required for
students on block schedule? This means I have 8th grade English students
for one semester but 90 minutes everyday. This block schedule allows me to
have time for discussion and reading. (My district requires me to teach
one novel but I usually do not spend weeks on this and use it as basis of
how our reading time will look in the class, include everyday vocab and
comprehension skills). I was thinking 20 books for the semester and from
there breaking into the genre requirements.

Also, wanted to share with the group a book that I checked out from our
district library. It was one Donalyn recommended in “Book Whisperer”:
Guiding Readers and Writers Grades 3-6 by Irene C. Fountas. It has
assisted me ideas for my minilessons that will go along with students’
novels, ideas for scheduling and genre breakdowns. AND tons more it is a
huge book 600 some pages.
Hopefully this is all clear as mud. Looking forward to some feedback.

Thanks Michelle for the website on another discussion for “book whisperer”
already checked it out and signed up.

There is an informal book discussion on "The Book Whisperer" going on
