Michelle,
Have you read Donalyn Miller's book, The Book Whisperer? It is about her experiences and techniques working with her middle school students in reading. I think you would find it helpful.

I
I have a question for reading teachers who work with middle school or higher kids...after working for years with grades 1-4 and infrequently 5, I'm in a 6,7,8 school providing intervention services. I've worked with middle schoolers before, but not as an interventionist. So many of my strategies deal with the learning to read aspect and using Harvey and Gouvdis thinking strategies, but my kids have had quite a bit of that and are still behind. I'm trying to figure out what are  the best kind of generic interventions that can be provided in 40 minute 3 day blocks to my varied students. We aren't supposed to operate as a resource room, and often can't because the kids come from different teams of
teachers. Anyone out there with ideas?
