As a reading specialist, I would have to say that DIBELS in one of the worst assessments I have ever worked with. There is a book written and supported by the IRA called, "The Truth About DIBELS." It is essentially a test of speed, not what the students actually know. For slow processors or students who need wait time, they will continue to show "at risk" every time.
The comprehension assessment is basically counting the number of words a students says during a retelling, not what the student says in the retelling. If you have to use it, use a triangulation of data in order to be more accurate. For those of you who use it, which students are you assessing? Do you use a different method to assess comprehension, if so, what? Thanks for your input!!
