We also use DIBELS on the Palm Pilots. It is a quick screening tool; it is not a diagnostic test. It takes very little classroom time as they are 1 minute tests. With the Palms, you have an instant report to show the child or the teacher, along with a progress graph showing all results. There is no paperwork, nothing to copy or file. The students use the same copy of the student materials and everything is recorded and timed on the Palm Pilot. It saves a great deal of teacher time.
I believe it is based upon over 30 years of research and it has been an effective tool for our district in helping all of our teachers target our struggling students. It has been an effective tool for us in monitoring progress and making sure we are reaching the needs of all our students. Parents also appreciate the reports and progress graphs. This screening tool gives us an idea as to which students might need further diagnostic testing, helping us plan more effective instruction for each individual.
