We use DIBELS in K-3. We assess every child. It does not assess
comprehension, so that's why it is not used in grades above 3. The K-3
teachers in our entire school system (Providence, RI) were given Palm Pilots
to assess the students. Every time we test a child, we sync the Palm and all
the data goes into the computerized system to manage the data. This data
tells us when to administer the test. It is done more often for our lowest
students, 1x/every other week for the "middle" group, and 3x/year (Sept.
Jan. & May) for the high group.

DIBELS has many good points and bad points. The data is collected from so
many students that it can be analyzed accurately and shows an accurate way
of helping those children who need help the most, right when they are
struggling, because of the frequency of collecting the data.

DIBELS also has many bad points, and that is using only one test. How much
can one test show? It never gets close to measuring what reading is really
about--making sense of print.
