But the point of progress monitoring is to change your instructional
strategies quickly if the trajectory line does not show growth to meet
the benchmark score. If you just complete the assessments and dont use
the informaton to monitor and adjust your instructional methods with
the child then there is no purpose in doing the assessments anyway. I
think that completing progress monitoring 1 X weekly is excessive, but
if you limit it to 4 X a year than you waste a lot of tme using
instructonal methods or materials that may not be working for the
child. This is true for whatever progress monitoring tools you choose
to use.

I also agree. I have I MUST do progress monitoring sometimes 1x/wk. when
multiplied by It means less teaching for 13 students, 1x/week, and
research
has said that all the testing does not make the trajectory line
different
than if these same students were tested 4x/year. The dots on the
trajectory
line still connect in the same line segment!

Ellen, I soooooooooo agree with you! Very well spoken. I wish I'd
written this because it is sooo true. It is frustrating for me and a
disservice to our students!

I have to respectfully disagree about the amount of time it takes as
I
feel that varies by district...
In my district K/1st have 29 kids (averages), 2/3 have 32 and 4/5
have 35.
We are not given subs, or any extra time for the assessments.
Although
many
of the tests are "1 minute tests," by the time you read the
directions,
give
multiple tests, deal with behavior issues in between, etc. it takes a
lot
more time than that! Most teachers typically lose 1 week of
instruction 3
times a year, plus...we are supposed to progress monitor. On top of
that,
we have to do at least 3 running records per year for each child
(this I
believe actually helps me to drive my instruction so I don't mind). I
feel
that I spend a good chunk of my life assessing. I am not saying thay
assessment is bad, it's just that I feel that I need to teach too:)
Many
of
the kids that are supposed to be progressed monitored, are actually
on/above
grade level students according to running records, but below
according to
DIBELS.
Basically, I think that the time that it takes depends on your
school/district.
Respectfully,
Ellen/1st & 2nd/Michigan
