I wonder if that is because Pearson Learning publishes TC reading
assessments as well as Donald Bear's words their way... food for thought...

I teach first grade... and I for one would like to incorporate some of the
program into my spelling curriculum... the manipulation of word cards
carries clout as does noticing similarities and differences between sorts...
and
searching for transfers in guided reading texts....after piloting wtw for
more than a year I find that without the inclusion of transfers on an
assessment (and not for bonus points) as well as needed the didactic detailed
explanation of why each sort is working the way it does....(in other words
the phonics rules that support and govern the word patterns... which takes
more time than the groups schedule comfortably allows) i feel the program at
least at the first grade level is lackluster and depends on responsible
partnerships which is not always the case for dependent strugglers at this
grade level ...Imagine paper thin cards blowing across desks as result of an
action by a ill-mannered partner... and how about those parents who cannot
seem to help children load books back and forth between home and classroom
... so that the teacher must make doubles of every set... a financial and
time constraint.

Hi Maxine, We have consultants from TC (Readers Workshop) because of a
grant. They are the ones who decided we had to incorporate it into our day at
a separate time. I agree it is separate just like Cast A Spell was. They
made us stop Cast A Spell even though it was working. Sue

Readers Workshop was not meant, as far as I know, to include Word Study.
Word Study should be a separate component. Readers workshop is where
Word
Study is applied.

Hi, I think it is the new "in" method, but I am not sure I see it being
successful long term. But we have just used it one year. They tell you to
do
an assessment and that you start after they get two wrong. But I would
disagree because some kids have good memories. As it turned out I had to
pull
way back because kids did not have vowel digraphs patterns learned or
basic
patterns, because we use Readers Workshop (Caulkins) really does not
focus
on phonics. They are now supporting Words Their Way, so that is why we
have
it.

Hi there

Apologies for cross posting....

I am interested in hearing from teachers who are using 'Words Their Way'
as
part of their spelling and vocab. program. I particularly would like to
know more about how it is managed in the room when you have children at
various levels.

The program is becoming very popular here (Queensland, Australia) and
schools are finding it is improving data. I know from previous threads on
these lists there are quite a few of you that use it, so I thought I would
go straight to the experts!

Any information you can provide would be a great assistance.

Kind regards,

Karen Back
