Birding Today with Joe & Doug from Missouri/Illinois.

Highlights:

- 4 Great Gray Owls along the McDavitt Rd!! We saw the first one around 8:15am
- 8:40am The owls were from the southern end around 3 miles north of Sax Rd
(CR 28) to 4 miles north of Sax Rd.
- Northern Hawk Owl was 1/4 mile north of CR 28 on CR 7 on the east side.
- Black-backed Woodpecker & American Three-toed Woodpecker were roughly 3.5
miles north of CR 28 on McDavitt Rd. At the north end of the bog habitat along
McDavitt Rd look on the east side of McDavitt Rd for a foot path from the road
going into the bog. The foot path is well traveled and packed down. Also look
for a fallen large Spruce Tree with the roots exposed above the ground as the
path is near here.
- Boreal Chickadee & Gray Jays. At the Admiral Road deer carcass/feeders. * A
few outside photographers have been sawing tree branches off the spruce tree
and I ask that this practice stop immediatly! The area is looking junky with
sawed off branches and also tossed evergreen tree branches (for perches) are
tossed at the based of the feeder. Please respect this place and do not treat
as your own personal photo studio!
- Common Redpolls, Pine Grosbeaks and Evening Grosbeaks at the feeding stations
- Northern Shrikes at various locations in the bog.
- Black-billed Magpie crossing over CR 28 near Cranberry Ln.

Duluth:

- 2 Snowy Owls roosting on the St. Louis River bay.
1. One was roosting (banded with black beanie/green tag #27 and if there are
more number than 27 I did not see any more numbers because of my view. This
owl was roosting on the ice ridge on the south end of Barker's Island in
Wisconsin.
2. Other owl was roosting near the cement boat near the large pile of white
rocks/gravel on the WI side again using the ice ridge as a roost. This owl did
not appear to be banded because of no beanie on head. It was a dark looking
owl.

* Look for Varied Thrush at 2215 W 4th Street == Not found despite looking for
30 minutes. Was not seen yesterday by another birder.
* Looked for Solitaire on 10th Ave East and Superior/London Rd and did not find
it.
* Looked For Harlequin Duck and did not find it at French River.

Saw a Merlin in Knife River.

Not a bad day!!
