I, too, am throwing my hat in the ring--er--page on the web:
http://www.escape.com/~fantasai/mozilla-reorg/mozilla.org/
Look, folks--no tables!
(BTW, I recommend exploring the Use Stylesheet menu in Mozilla--
and playing with the hyperlinks. :)
Well, maybe not a serious contender, especially since the
fonts need some XP work and I haven't yet tried reconciling
my CSS with Nav4.x, but food for thought nonetheless.
Seriously, we need to write the content for the new
mozilla.org main page. The current one is, IMO, far too
cluttered content-wise. Aesthetics can be arbitrary, but
every bit of content on the page should be justified.
So, what do you think belongs on the main page?
My list is pretty short--basically a welcoming message of
sorts added to what I've already got. Here are my
justifications:
Logo - Identifies the website
Navbar - Even though the same links are provided below,
this familiarizes visitors with the site's
navigation before they plunge in.
Title - Need a title, what?
Welcoming message (not shown) - Explains to the visitor
what it is they've landed on. There's an
information booth straight ahead, but if you
don't tell people what sort of place this is,
there's a good chance they're not going to
spend the extra effort to find out.
List of the main parts of the site + descriptions -
Lays out the site for the visitor, explaining
what each section is so they can find what
they're looking for quickly and easily.
Placing links within the descriptions makes
frequently sought pages easily found and
accessed while removing them from list context.
This gives the illusion of less paths to
consider without really limiting the choices.
Copyright -
You can't possibly expect mozilla.org to omit
/this/.
Agree? Disagree? Got something to add (probably)? Can't
stand my text? Write something; you can't slash at a pen
name with a knife. (You could bash me over the head with
a dictionary, though.)
