People all ready have a problem identifying the difference
between Netscape Communicator, Netscape 6, and Mozilla. Calling
Mozilla "Communicator" just compounds the confusion..
The users are very confused; they've been told that Netscape 6
is an upgrade, that it's not an upgrade, that it is to replace
Communicator and that it is completely unrelated to
Communicator. Now here you are saying that it IS Communicator.
How can you say that it's not confusing? Especially if youlook
at all the different Netscape.mozilla and Netscape groups and
read all the queries and condemnations from users who are trying
to figure out what is going on. It is ABSOLUTELY confusing, it
is CLEARLY confusing, and obvious to anyone paying attention.
Users see "netscape.mozilla.public.general", and note that they
are using "Netscape Mozilla"[4.7] and then are told they
shouldn't be asking questions or making comments here.
The confusion gets piled deeper. Then they get to the secure
netscape 6 groups, and what are they told? "Netscape 6 and
Mozilla are unrelated to Communicator". And here YOU are,
saying just the opposite.
>There needs to be a product name. "Mozilla" is too broad IMO
>(Is it the base technology? All mozilla.org source? The app
>suite?). What do you suggest?
If you want it to be Communicator, then you will have to be
prepared to deal with the 4.7 users demanding attention;
Communicator is a brand name, and one that has millions of
users. Just as a Ford dealer has to put up with every rickety
Ford that rolls onto the lot, so must you tolerate every
Communicator problem; you've run up the flag, after all.
If you want it to be Communicator, everyone else needs to know
that; this is the *very first time* I've heard Mozilla referred
to as "Communicator". And I've been around for *months*, and
I've been digging around for background. And simply saying
"well, the guys working on it here know" is not an adequate
response; the folks on the Netscape side of the fence need to
know, too.
Because right now? it's damned confusing.
