Maybe I don't quite have the best understanding of what front end and 
back end really means...

What I really want is for the preferences of each module to be saved 
upon closing the particular module.  If I close the Mail / News window, 
can't Mozilla assume that I am done with that module and save whatever 
settings were changed there?  Like I said, I'm not a professional 
programmer (yet) and I really don't know how Mozilla opens and closes 
files upon opening and closing modules, but it would make sense to me to 
keep files closed as much as possible.
