As another comment, let me say that what the new page does should
be a preference also. Personally, I CANNOT STAND having a new page be
the same as the current one. I find it quite confusing, and it's one
of my big peeves with IE. However, obviously, a lot of people like
this behavour. So it should be a preference in addition to the start
page.

I agree.  I wish every browser had the option (like Mozilla does) to just open a blank page, every time.  I don't care if I've been browsing all day, I still would like to open a blank browser window.
