Hmmm. I did it last night under linux (Caldera OL3.1, KDE2.2.1, 
XFree4.1.0, kernel 2.4.9) with an 1113 build, and the tab
was placed to the left and couldn't be closed. damn...

I just tried the procedure again and got the problem. When I said "Open 
a Compose window" that's a MAIL compose window, not a Composer window. 
You SURE you followed the procedure "to the letter"?
