IIRC this has been considered several times (I think they even got a 
version working in Netscape 4.0) but it has been rejected because there

A marketing decision, and not much anyone can complain about. (They are 
giving you a browser remember, is an icon on the desktop such a high 
price to pay? Especially as it can be deleted.

Don't get disheartened by the negative comments in this an other posts. These are 
features that shouldn't/can't be changed, but that doesn't mean your other ideas 
couldn't be implemented.
