Maybe it is platform dependent?  I am using Windows2000 with 12/01 build.  When I go to www.mozillanews.org and bookmark it, the bookmark has the default bookmark icon not the site icon...

Sorry, there appears to be a general bug that the site icon doesn't appear next to the bookmark until you leave the site when the site uses link syntax which confused me.  It isn't related to shortcut icon vs icon.
