My theory:
Those who prefer the short names (or aren't bothered by them)
used three pane view in NC4.xx.
Those who prefer the entire name used twopane viewing in Nc4.xx,
and would revert to Message Center to see the groups list.
This makes the Mozilla newsreader largely unpleasant for those
of us who prefer twopane viewing and message center.
