I don't want the folder pane wide enough to see the full name, because it is a waste of screen real estate. If it isn't abbreviated, and the folder pane has a reasonable width (approx 3cm for me) then the useful part of the names (the right-most) is hidden, making it impossible to tell which folder is which. If the names weren't abbreviated, the folder pane would have to be *at least* twice as wide as I have it at the moment, and I think it's wide enough already. In any case, I see a lot of people using abbreviated names in usenet messages, usually when referring to the group they are posting to, or to a closely related group, as a convenience. There's no real need to type in the whole name when you have that sort of context, and I think you have a similar amount of context in the folder pane.
