What about making it automatic? 4.x abbreviated by cutting and adding
"..." in the middle, depending on how large the folder pane way.
Why not do something similar? You show as much as possible from the
name, and if not all of it fits into the pane, you abbreviate from the
left (or right: pref!) in the newsgroup style. E.g.
