I'll add my 2 cents. I helped turn this on in the thread pane and I
really like this. Before this fix you could never see your newsgroups
anyway because you'd have to make your folder pane really large to see
something like netscape.public.mozilla.mail-news. As Seth mentions in a
later post, we used to have a pref in the UI, in fact I think it also
let you customize the number of levels you wanted to abbreviate, so you
could have n.p.m.mail-news, or n.p.mozilla.mail-news, etc. I'm sure the
pref got taken out of the UI for usability reasons. Though, a pref for
abbreviating in the UI shouldn't be too confusing (where as a pref for
the number of abbrev levels might be).

Addressing a message later in this thread, we've had a bug for a while
to not sort the newsgroup names. Previous Netscape versions kept the
newsgroups in the order you added them. It was easier to keep
everything sorted to make everything consistent with the mail folders.
It wouldn't be too hard to add the non-sorting behavior to newsgroups.
If you notice, we already don't sort mail folders completely
alphabetically (Inbox comes on top, then Sent, Trash, etc, followed by a
list of alphabetical non-special folders). If we're sorting
alphabetically, it might make more sense to sort by real name vs
abbreviated name. That also would not be too hard to do.
