Agreed.

4.x has "watch thread" and "ignore thread" in the context menu of the
message itself (on the thread pane). This seems like a good place for
"mark thread read" too.

OTOH, is there any reason why we shouldn't do what Navigator does for
search, go, home, etc and make it optional? Some people appear to like
it, and I still subscribe to the belief that customizability can't hurt
(so long as it's either well-presented or hidden from novice users
entirely).
