Maybe... I tend to think of it as pretty much in line with a lot of
other "features" that NS put into the product, though! ;) At least this
was a feature that served a real need, even if it was a hack. I suspect
NS got fed up of all the flamewars...

Yes, I think in the past I've proposed using RDF for toolbars/menus,
much like the personal toolbar is already implemented. Then the
customization could simply work exactly like Bookmarks work now. With
sufficient hackery, it would possibly be possible to make most of the
toolbar buttons simply tweaked bookmarklets - the difficulty would be
things like the URLbar and back/forward that have additional XBL-backed
functionality over and above "this is what to do when clicked".
Of course, I've never actually come up with any code to substantiate
this...
