Funnily enough, that was going to be my one suggestion ...

Something to try would be the sort of interface used in mammoth
installers (such as the installer for Microsoft Office), where
components contain a number of sub-components.

+-----------------------------------------------------+
| Synchronize ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: |
+-----------------------------------------------------+
| _Items to synchronize: |
| +-----------------------------------------------+-+ |
| | V [-] E-mail |A| |
| | V [/] student.canterbury.ac.nz |:| |
| | [/] Unsent Messages |:| |
| | [/] Inbox |:| |
| | [/] Trash |:| |
| | > [ ] mailandnews.com |:| |
| | > [/] Newsgroups |:| |
| | V [ ] Address Books |:| |
| | [ ] Personal Address Book |:| |
| | [ ] Mozilla People |V| |
| +-----------------------------------------------+-+ |
| [/] _Save these as default synchronization settings | [perhaps]
| |
| [/] Go _offline after synchronizing |
| |
| ( Cancel ) (( Synchronize )) |
+-----------------------------------------------------+

This would depend on an XP Toolkit bug to create tri-state checkboxes
(off, on, and partly-on), since I don't think we have those yet.
