Whatever the reason, I agree that top-posting makes perfect sense for ordinary email, where you're engaged in a one-to-one conversation and don't need to re-read the entire thread to keep track, but might want to refer to the previous messages for reference. This also simplifies message management -- you can thereafter delete the earlier posts and save or print a singe message with the entire discussion. This is why I wish the reply method preference were controlled in the account settings, rather than the general mail-news preferences, so I could enable different reply methods for email and newsgroups.
