There are several questions regarding Mail/News that come up often enough
that I suspect there should be some thought given to exposing them in the
UI, since /not/ having them there seems to cause a usability barrier for a
lot of people (for Moz users as well as for users of various distros).
(Note that I've not looked to see if there are already bugs on what I'm
suggesting; at the moment, I suspect it's more important to open
discussion on the matter anyway. . . .)
1. Having SMTP settings separated from other account settings seems to
result in confusion, especially for those who want/need to specify more
than one out-going SMTP server. Yes, it can be done . . . but it's rather
an opaque process to a lot of people, given the number of times the
question comes up.
While it would be nice to have this grouped with other server settings for
an account, it doesn't seem feasible, so I would suggest a separate tree
item for each account. Yes, it clutters up the UI a bit more, but if it
makes things a bit more transparent; see below for why I suggest this.
It seems that there are enough ISPs who require a full user ID
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and/or password authentication for their SMTP servers that
these prefs should be exposed in the UI. A set of SMPT prefs would then
allow you to choose which SMPT server to use, to set a given SMPT server
as a default (?), and to indicate the nature of the user ID, whether a
password is required, and whether SSL is supported.
2. Something similiar seems to exist with some NNTP servers, where user
ID/password combo is required to access different groups. Again, this
seems to be a usability barrier since there is no simple, transparent way
in which to do this and even the work-around seems to cause people no end
of trouble. There seems to be /just/ enough space to server setting prefs
for news servers that this could be added w/o adding another tree item.
This isn't meant to be detailed; just (hopefully) to open some discussion.
/b.
