On 09 Sep 2002, it is alleged that Philip Gabbert sauntered in to
netscape.public.mozilla.ui and loudly proclaimed:

I don't have a problem with it, either, and I assume there is/was a reason
for not making selecting an SMTP server for a given account a little more
transparent. The problem is that it's backfired: a /lot/ of people seem to
have problems with finding and setting SMTP servers.

The other problem is that if your ISP's SMTP server requires an @isp.net-
style log-on, you have manually to add the entry to user.js given the
current set-up.

Where it gets nasty for some people is if they have several accounts, each
of which requires a user-ID and password to access the SMPT server. Having
this more transparent would make things easier for 'em, altho' it has the
potential to be a two-edged sword, too.

A default SMTP server is already set up, /non/? And you can already specify
that that default always be used. What I am suggesting would be a way of
making that a bit easier for people; . . .

. . . it would also make it easier to figure out just why you're getting %s
for an SMTP server. ;-)

I encountered it once, several months ago, and simply reset the SMTP server
thro' the UI. Worked fine.

/b.
