Missing Spellcheck feature

In attempting to set up 1.2a (20020910) on a friend's system, 
ascertained that the Spellcheck feature cited in Help is not in the 
Compose|Options list where it is reported to reside.  Came home and 
figured out that I didn't have it either.  Tried plugins, but no luck 
finding one, or any references.
At our ages, Spellcheck is infinitely more desirable and perhaps, necessary.
Any assistance will be appreciated.
