This could be clue. Offhand I don't know what file the urlbar code is
in, but I'll track it down and take a look. When you hit Enter in the
urlbar, does the statusbar at the bottom react at all? (Normally it
would show "Resolving host [hostname]".)

Here it only did after clicking search a second time, then hung waiting
for an ad, and crashed when I tried to end the hang by clicking on Home.
Happened twice but not the third time...?

That's what I expected with a nondebug build; I just wanted to make sure
there was nothing squawking there.
Another idea: try creating a new default profile and see if its urlbar
is also numb.
