Well, at http://student.uq.edu.au/~s302585 I see just such a project.
Here's a blurb...

<SNIP!>

In the great history of gnu-gnaming, LAME stands for LAME Ain't an Mp3
Encoder. I chose this acronym because what I am supplying is not an mp3
encoder. The dist10patch is totally incapable of producing an mp3
stream. It is incapable of even being compiled by itself. You need the
dist10 ISO distribution for this software to work

This is LAME version 2.0, and should be identical in performance to
8hz-mp3-2b-m11. On a P166 it speeds up the dist10 source so that
encoding an mp3 takes about 2.7 times as long as the length of the file
for 128kbps encoding. That's about 110 seconds to encode a 40 second
file.

<SNIP!>

I've used this before it was a diff, and it works well and MUCH faster
than the origional 8hz. Check out the page.

Unfortunately, I'm not a programmer (ever heard that before :), just a
guy with a good ear and a lurker. :( But hey, if anyone else wants to
contribute ;)
