I recently got an email from Tero Auvinen pointing out that the FhG encoder does not use joint stereo at bitrates above 160kbs. Should we mimic this in LAME? Make the default "-m s" for bitrates 160 and higher? (jstereo could still be turned on by specifing "-m j".) And what about VBR frames? Turn off jstereo for 160kbs & higher frames? I'm tempted by this because LAME's mid/side stereo switching criterion has some flaws as compared to FhG's. I have been trying a new algorithm from that Johnston & Ferreira paper, but it still needs a lot of work. Mark -- MP3 ENCODER mailing list ( http://geek.rcc.se/mp3encoder/ )
