I've been testing the -X option (subtration of 5dB), and I think it
usually makes things a little worse at fixed 128kbs.  However, in
Main_Theme.wav (discussed several times here ) it actually removes one
of the compression artifacts (a very faint tinkle sound near the
beginning of the sample, as the foreground is panned from right to
left).  

So I'm thinking a weaker version, and more frequency selective along
the lines of Roberts' formula might help.

Xing also creates a funny compression artifact at the same point,
but it sounds different.  FhG sounds pretty good.
