For efficiency reasons. Passing pointers to data around within a program
is faster than moving data through a pipe.

Also, LAME's new ability to take mp3 files as input will make creating
low-bitrate mp3s from higher bitrate mp3s a snap if resampling is built
in.

Adding a second pipe makes things even worse. Also, I've had trouble
trying to get mpg123 to pipe data to LAME.
