Ok, maybe I will have a closer look later;
Has anyone done any testing on codec behaviour in bit/burst error/drop
environments ?  Which decoder is best in this respect ?

Did anyone already consider the ISO-11172 note p. 141 wrt layer 3: 
"Rearrangement of the Huffman coded values: to get better error robustness
for the low frequency part of the spectrum the Huffman coded values can be
transmitted not in their logical order, but in an interleaved fashion.
