pgcc should be avoided at all costs. It seems not to care about generating
bogus code so long as the result runs very quickly.
(seriously, pgcc will optimize bugs into squeaky clean ANSI code. This is one
case where the compiler really can't be trusted to DTRT). Have a look at the
EGCS ia32 branch if you want to play with more aggressive x86 optimizations...
