If, when encoding in mid-side, the side channel represents - to within
masking thresholds - a straightforward scaling of the mid channel, the
encoder should presumably switch to IS. IIRC, phase response in human
hearing is poor at very low and very high frequencies (directional sense
mostly operates on mid-band frequencies); are the side masking thresholds
correspondingly high in the extreme upper and lower bands?
