Depends - there are places for both.
For running multiple live-streaming
apps on one machine, it could be quite
useful to have a 5x real-time encoder
even if not "The Best".  Single-stream
hardware encoders are several thousand
a pop, and if you can replace 3 or 4 with
one Linux box, you're doing pretty well.
