Hello all!
If I remember correctly the Lame project started out to implement a
completely free audio encoder. But soon afterwards many patents came across
the developer's mysterious ways and decision was made to go along with MPEG
layer 3 and sh*t on the patents (a good idea anyway, IMHO).
But now there came a supposedly free encoder, called OggVorbis (wasn't it
once called OggSquish?).
What do you think of it?
I did some testing, primarily audio quality tests, and came to the
conclusion that it is great! In most cases, if I can trust my ears, much
better than current CVS Lame. So where is the problem with it? There has to be
one ;) OK, it's not MPEG layer 3 but who cares? It is free, without patents
on the algorithms, at least the author claims it to be, and it's GPLed.

PS: Not that I want to discourage lame development. What the Lame project
has achieved so far is great if not amazing ;)
