Hi all,
We've had a bit of spam and some viruses on the mp3encoder list
of late. What you haven't seen is the other spam and things (sircam
attachments) which I've been filtering out automatically.

A few subscribers have e-mailed me to ask if I could clamp down on the
list postings a bit. Suggestions were:

        - moderate the list
        - only allow subscribers to post to the list

Moderating the list means much more work for me, and it also slows down
the list operation, as I would only approve postings once every day, and
not on weekends.

I could allow only subscribers to post to the list, but I've done this
before on other lists, and I found that people often post from other
e-mail addresses, and that blocks their postings.

One thing I could do (for viruses) is to wind back the maximum message size;
it's currently 102,400 but perhaps that's too big. I can also add more
attachment patterns to the attachment blocking list; currently I block

/^content-type:.*\.(exe|com|zip|vbs|shs|hta|scr|chm)/i
/^Received: from geek.rcc.se/i

The geek block really helps stop spam too :)

Anyway, please let me know if you have any ideas or complaints. I will
be away all next week at a conference, so I will have less time to read
my e-mail and monitor the list.

Finally, thanks to you all for making the mp3encoder list worth reading.

        Warren Toomey
