could you test
"start /LOW lame -V0 -b160 -mj --athlower 5 -F test.wav"  instead
you favorite "lame -V0 -b160 -mj --athlower 5 -F test.wav"

what optimization do you want? all lame binaries that i have were
compiled with default "nmake -f Makefile.MSVC". all other binaries
with different optimizations or with any 'unofficial' code enabled (as
387rh or your nlp) go to my 'alpha' section
