Tim,

I think this is a brilliant idea, and one that I have been doing in my
neighborhood as Chair of the Stevens Square Community Organization for the
past three years through our monthly board meeting.  And while this provides
at least one opportunity for people to ask questions, discuss issues, and
voice concerns, it's what I consider the minimum.

I make it a point to be out in the neighborhood every day, talking to people
about the issues on their minds, listening to their concerns and delivering
information regarding what can be done next.  Every day, I consider it my
responsibility as Chair and as a concerned citizen to be out, accessible, and
ensuring that my Community is having its needs met and voice heard.  I have
over the past several years hosted spontaneous potluck barbeques in Stevens
Square Park inviting anyone to attend with the stipulation that you either
bring a dish to share or stay a half hour and talk to your neighbors.

I will continue to do this regardless of the election outcome, but also plan
to expand this to the whole ward.  In addition I will add two things as
guarantees rather than promises of what I will do as the Councilmember for
the 6th Ward: monthly brown bags and open office hours.  At least once a
month, I will have a day set aside for open office hours where anyone can
come and talk about issues and concerns.  People will still be able to set
appointments for the rest of the month, but one day will be exclusively for
anyone who wants to come.  The other will be a monthly brown bag in each of
the neighborhoods where anyone can come and talk about issues on their mind.

In my mind the job of the Councilmember is to represent the issues and
concerns of their constituents, not telling them what will happen but rather
engaging them in how to actualize ideas into cohesive plans of action.  The
most important component is to be accessible, and just I have been I will
continue to be.
