Tim brings up an excellent point, and to be blunt, I have no idea
why monthly town meetings with the Mayor and appropriate council person
aren't done now. I certainly agree that we have a city government that has
done a poor job of listening to it's people. A perfect example of this was
the city council's vote to reappoint Robert Olson as police chief despite
the massive pubic outcry at the January public safety and reg. services
committee meeting. Roughly 90% of the people attending spoke passionately
and convincingly against this reappointment and against CODEFOR. I've also
heard stories from store owners in Phillips and on the West Bank about how
they've waited for weeks just to get an appointment to talk to the Mayor on
the phone.
I fear that my "vague pledge" to be more of a listener than a leader
needs some clarification here. One of the points on our platform is
government accountability, and I believe that should include accessability.
We state that we will hold weekly town meetings at various places throughout
the sixth ward, as well as an open door office policy. I would do this to
hear out other sixth ward residents, but also just to meet people and
perhaps bring "kitchen table" politics back to city hall. I would also
pledge not to push pet projects that are against the interests of the ward,
and to make sure that something controversial, such as the HWY 55 reroute,
would have quite a bit a community input before simply going ahead (I was
against it myself.) Of course, I can't speak for the Mayor, or rather who
ever will be the next mayor, but I would do my best to involve the Mayor and
who ever else is needed. Given how this sort of debate will likely play out
in the in the mayoral race, I look forward to seeing Tim as a part of that.
