I used to play my saxophone down by the old conservatory. Often,
when I'd made enough, I'd literally spend afternoons watching Del Mar play
his congas and make up those silly rhymes. A couple of times we played
together. I've been wondering what happened to him for a while. Del Mar
was an inspiration to every street musician on Nicollet Mall and elsewhere
in Minneapolis. I remember the brushes Del Mar had with police and others
trying to force him and other street musicians off of Nicollet. Del Mar
fought this all of the way and helped make it legal for us to play on the
Mall. I'd definitely be in favor of a statue, right across from the IDS,
where he always played. There is definitely something missing downtown this
summer.
I've heard through the grape vine that there will be something at
Intermedia Arts on Sunday commemorating him. Can anyone confirm that?
Sunday is a pretty busy day for me, but I'll make time for this.
