There were indeed a number of surprises. I watched it live. Natalie Johnson Lee switched her vote from Johnson to Ostrow. This was the most surprising part. She then nominated Robert Lilligren for vice president. Robert won -- 7-6 over Lisa Goodman.

I agree -- this whole attitude that non-DFLers shouldn't take leadership roles in the city is bizzarre -- and it has kept the most qualified person from chairing Ways and Means. Both Paul Ostrow and Lisa Goodman spoke in favor of that one. The other surprise was the election of the Executive Committee. Initially Lilligren, Johnson Lee and Goodman were nominated -- and then Zerby made a substitute motion to put himself on that committee. This substitute motion passed. House Speaker Steve Sviggum came to the ceremony. I thanked him for coming -- and told him, I wished we could get some Republicans elected to the legislature from Minneapolis.
