Commissioner Young's comment on the futility of efforts to curb speeding
on the parkways is both disappointing and unfortunate in light of the
wealth of practical evidence and research data available on effective
traffic calming measures. While I recognize that Ms. Young's viewpoint
does not constitute official MPRB policy, it may reflect the board's
unofficial position. I hope this isn't the case. According to its web
site, the Park Board has not yet set an official policy on traffic
issues.

In 1997, in response to citizen concerns, the MPRB commissioned the
"Parkway Traffic Study," a joint undertaking of a Citizen Advisory
Committee, MPRB staff, and technical experts. The group examined the
various problems of traffic on the parkways and made specific
recommendations for calming traffic and enhancing pedestrian and bicycle
safety. Based on the committee's recommendations, the Park Board
instituted traffic calming test measures for evaluation. Perhaps someone
with knowledge of these efforts could inform the list of the project's
current status.
