So you want to see your political future, Minneapolis?

Thanks to, ahem, sources, the Redistricting Commission's tentative ward
map is now posted on the Redistricting Geek website:
http://members.tcq.net/david/index.htm

I have not absolutely confirmed the accuracy - however, this is a
discussion list, not journalism, and I'm pretty sure this is legit.
Sorry about the lack of street names, but this is how I got it.

I'm told the big enchilada was approved (sources say) 5-3. I don't know
if that was non-DFLers versus DFLers, though the number would work if
chairperson Parker Trostel sat out the vote.

Some very quick observations about what you will see:

1. All incumbents are protected (the most stretchy was my new guy Robert
Lilligren with a few Phillips blocks snuck into the new Ward 8. Dean
Zimmermann, the other Phillips guy, survives on the east edge of Ward
6.)
2. There's a new Downtown ward (also including Bryn Mawr and Kenwood)
3. Natural and man-made boundaries are flouted (see Wards 3 & 8)
4. There are more than a few neighborhoods split, although neighborhood
boundaries are more respected than in the '90s map. Don't know if some
'hoods got carved up three or more ways.
5. No clue about the minority opportunity factor, but I'm betting it's 5
wards depending on the definition.
6. If you're wondering about what I call "homage to the new Guthrie
Theater's skyway" in Ward 8, that's probably to conform to the charter
requirement that wards be no more than twice as tall (north-south) as
high (east-west).

Other observations to come, but I thought you'd like to see for
yourselves right away, then comment to the list.

Those who know first-hand stuff, please way in.

David Brauer
King Field - Ward 8 (if this plan passes)
