Dear Commissioners: I want to ask each of you to take an objective look at the NAACP Community Redistrict Plan. This plan is truly a non-partisan plan that is based on general community interests and not any political or incumbent agendas.
You were elected by the voters in the City of Minneapolis as a public servant. I would hope that you would remember just that. You are a public servant, and your personal interests hopefully will take a back seat to the interests of the community at large. As I said in my email to the Redistricting Commission, I am aware that in the past that redistricting was a political party "war". I also know that the City Council has a representative to look out for their interests. I have noticed that the plan that was largely supported by the DFL protects incumbents. These wards don't tend to be compact as the Minneapolis Charter recommends. When many of you were elected the general theme was "We need a change in City Council". Please show that this was not just campaign rhetoric but seriously from your hearts. I would hope that you would send a message to the people in the City of Minneapolis. This message would be that the City Council in place in 2002 were more interested in the needs of the citizens of the City of Minneapolis than their personal self interests. Minneapolis citizens (your consituents) will have to live with the final redistricting plan for ten years. Please show us, the citizens, that you support a plan that does show compassion for the City as a whole, not just a select few. Respectfully, Matthea Little Smith Powderhorn Park ===== Matthea Little Smith "Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation are people who want crops without plowing the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightning; they want the ocean without the roar of its many waters. The struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, or it may be both. But it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand: it never has and it never will." -- Frederick Douglas __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
