Here's the scoop: the day before the Hohmann Report, at least three
representatives of the DFL party, along with two unidenitified
redistricting commissioners, were seen at Lake Calhoun shoving
"boatloads" (my source's word, not mine) of ice into the lake, in an
apparent attempt to
skew the ice out call.

<snip>

Folks apparently wanted the ice out call for April 14, 2002, because it
would involve a winner who favors Killian's over more local brews.
Apparently, the DFL party insiders all drink Grain Belt, which figures,
but which does not explain the escapade of the DFLers and the
redistricting folks.

[TB] Perhaps that explains why when there was absolutely no ice on
Cedar Lake (thus an ice free Hidden Beach for the media event) or Lake
of the Isles, there was still a significant amount of ice on both Lake
Calhoun and Lake Harriet. It also explains why most of Lake Calhoun's
ice was on the left side of the lake and there was a union label melted
into the remaining ice.

This adding of ice to the lake may explain why at 2 o'clock this
afternoon it is a full 2 degrees colder in Minneapolis than it is at the
St. Paul Downtown Airport.

I'm concerned that this may delay the swimming season on Lake Calhoun as
the addition of the ice will only increase the amount of time it takes
the lake to warm to a comfortable swimming temperature (even the wet
suit wearing wind surfers were not out on the open sections of the lake
yesterday).

We need to stop environmental destructive fixing of contests now!!!
