I've been riding my bike to work downtown for the better part of 20 years and am completely happy cobbling together a route without the state's intervention. Part of the joy of bicycle commuting for me is cutting through parking lots, going up one-way streets, detouring on sidewalks, and generally thumbing my nose at the conventions of traffic (stoplights, etc.). With that freedom, of course, comes the acknowledgement that I'm responsible for my actions. If I put myself in harm's way (and I do my best not to) I have nobody to blame but myself. Cars will always own the road around here and it's my job to get out of their way. Having a bikes-only street, I fear, would only welcome further regulation of bike commuters and fuel the rage many motorists already feel for us pedalers.
