Sorry this reply is a little late--I'm just going through
back-messages this morning.

At last week's annual meeting of the Midtown Greenway Coalition, the
answer given to the above question was "late this year." Hennepin
County has already purchased a sliver of the corridor that connects
the Greenway to the "East LRT" trail in St. Louis Park. They still
need to remove tracks before laying pavement, but that's all expected
to happen in 2002.

For those with mountain bikes or hybrids, a fairly peaceful Eastbound
route is to follow the tracks for a few blocks after the trail ends.
Just as the trail makes its arc up towards the exit at Glenwood, turn
left onto the dirt and head to the tracks. The right side has a
reasonably ridable path to it. After passing under 5th Street, cross
the tracks and ride through the Ford Centre parking lot, which drops
you off onto 5th Ave. Turn right, and proceed until the road ends at
2nd Ave. Go one block right and take 4th Ave all the way to the river
(this may still require cutting across a dirt parking lot--I haven't
been there in a while).

This route is a little longer than going through the downtown
business district, but the streets are all much quieter, and you even
pass within a block of a few coffee shops, in case that's a bonus to
you.
