I am looking at the city school board endorsements. It looks like 4 white people got endorsed and 2 black people did not. I believe Al Gallmon is not seeking re- election, so Sharon Henry-Blythe might be the only person of color on the school board. I am pretty sure less than half the students in MPS are white.
I can't criticize the credentials of the endorsed candidates, and I also notice that voters usually consider being a parent a prerequisite. But I do think we need some people on the school board who have some expertise in being people of color. That's not a typo. Someone recently submitted an article called "learning while black", and I have seen the same experiences with Hmong and Latino students. Going forward, I think the DFL needs to decide if this is a priority, and work as a group to develop candidates of color rather than leaving it solely on the shoulders of individuals to organize their own campaigns. Easier said than done but if anyone had ideas, I would like to hear them. -- Nikki Carlson 4035 Sheridan Av. S.
